Commercial Bi-Folding High Speed Gates

Photos were not allowed to be taken during the construction process due to security. A total of four entrances were installed with bi-folding speed gates for DHL. The gate system was designed to integrate within the existing access control parking barrier system and add additional high security. Due to the site layout a sliding or swing gate was not possible as the leaves would intrude on the opening space between the gate posts.

Speed gates can open at more than twice the speed of a traditional swinging gate of the same size, which ensures a fast flow of traffic while ensuring security of the site. Hi speed gates are often used on police stations and possibly the bat cave due to the fast action opening times of the gates. These gates are also very popular at high security installations such as Power Stations, warehouses and government buildings.

The trackless speed gate  utilises a PLC controlled, inverter driven, 3 phase motor, worm and wheel gearbox with a direct-drive shaft connected to the gate leaf, which ensures a smooth and positive movement. The gates motors are very heavy duty and are designed for minimal maintenance and 100% duty cycle i.e. continuous operation

The gates are manufactured using a RHS steel frame and CHS tubular steel infills- it is then galvanised and powder coated to suit the customer requirements- i.e corporate branding.

The high speed gates can be customised with a wide range of infills for privacy or finials to match adjoining fencing design or the property. Also available are spiked tops, flashing lights and sirens if you really need to ensure people heed your warning.

This is a recent electric sliding gate installation carried out by Renzland Powergates Ltd in Richmond, Surrey.

The entrance was modified to accommodate the new gates and give the client more parking spaces on the driveway. As the driveway is on a inclined hill, precise ground works were carried out ensure the gate ran smoothly and level.

The new timber gates are made from Entandrophragma cylindricum, commonly known as  sapele or sapelli, it is a large tree native to tropical west Africa. It is reminiscent of mahogany and from the same family tree ha! Cadillac uses sapele wood for interior wood trim on its vehicles. It is a good compromise between the tough and extremely hard wearing properties of Iroko and the low cost of Softwood we would classify this as an entry level hardwood- therefore the rear of the gate was re-enforced with a metal framework that was galvanised with a black powder coat finish.

Here is a recent installation for a multi user gate system in Ascot, Berkshire. The brief was to create an electric gate system which sympathetically blended in with the existing built environment whilst being well engineered for continuous usage.

The clients were unsure of the best way to build the entrance, so we came up with 2 suggestions-

  1.  Modifying the existing piers and build new piers
  2.  Removing existing piers and build new piers

Our design team took detailed dimensions and drafted both options on CAD which you can view below- option one was chosen as aesthetically the entrance looked more balanced with a narrower driveway and the additional 1000mm distorted the gate. This is where Renzland gates drive real value in to the project, very few Gate installation companies in Berkshire offer this level of detail and design consultancy expertise pre-build. This affords our clients complete piece of mind knowing exactly what they are getting for their money.

Due to constant use the gate motors needed to be heavy duty and very reliable therefore BFT SUB BT motors were chosen as they are a low voltage hydraulic operator built for very intensive use, suitable for any type of residential, industrial or multi-residence application. The motors are fitted with mechanical stops which eliminate the need for a physical gate stop which has been known to damage low suspension sports cars. The motors have a built in virtual encoder, guaranteeing maximum anti-crushing safety thanks to the electronic slowdown.

As there were several properties using this gated entrance we advised the client on a GSM based intercom. This is a wireless entry phone system which avoided any issues and saved the cost of taking up the brick driveway for cable runs and making good internally to the house.  The system was mounted on a matching podium so visitors do not need to exit the vehicle.

The gates were hung from 2 substantial steel I beams (RSJ’s) located inside the piers they are then filled with concrete. This requires very precise setting out of the steelwork and onsite fabrication to ensure the gates align perfectly.

In our professional opinion this is the most secure way to hang gates on this type of application. Due to a sharp decline on the camber of the driveway to one side, the gates had a subtle infill at the bottom to make the gap less obvious. The gates are galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 and powder coated to BS EN 13438 and BS EN 15773.

As you will see from the CAD visuals, this project was executed to the exact spec with the exception of the lights which were chosen and retro fitted by the client.

Electric gates- How to overcome difficult ground levels

 This was an interesting electric gate project on the Wentworth estate, Virginia Water, Surrey.

The property driveway was located on a very steep hill, although the opening width of the driveway was less than 3900mm the dropped from one side by over 400mm. Gates have to be fitted absolutely level or the hinge geometry will not align and the system will not work as it should. Whats more the gate operators will wear out much faster as they have more strain as they are not moving in an efficient linear motion.

The easiest way to overcome this scenario is to mount the gate leafs on blocks or stilts, This is exactly what most gate installers would do, however aesthetically this looks terrible as one gate leaf will have a 400mm gap underneath it.

David Viera- lead designer at Renzland Powergates Ltd designed this system with an angled bottom rail, so whilst one leaf was longer in height they are perfectly level at the top therefore the gates followed the contour of the driveway giving the illusion the bottom was level. We hung the gates from columns rather than posts as this also drew the eye away from the drop and helped frame the gates between the adjoining railings.

It is small details like this that make a difference to the overall look and feel of the gate system- and this expertise comes from experience. We were recently called by a prospective client to put right some electric gates that were installed incorrectly by an electrician not a professional gate engineering firm.

We have all been disturbed early in the morning by annoying door to door sales people or others making unsolicited visits. The installation of an intercom system integrated within your electric gates means that you have control over exactly who can, or cannot enter your property.

With a vast choice of access control systems available- which system is right for you?

There are many variables to take into consideration and your choice will be limited by the range (distance from the door station at your gate to your home) environment, your requirements and of course budget.

Gate access control equipment generally fall into the following categories-

Hard wired Access Control- audio only-  Average cost inc fitting £350 + 

Pro’s- Offer a low cost, robust solution , no ongoing costs.

Con’s- Basic functionality audio only, cost of wiring into existing home and making good. Unable to control entrance whilst away from the property. The entry level models generally look and feel low end, which will detract from the entrance aesthetics.

Wireless Audio Access Control – Average cost inc fitting £450+ 

Pro’s Low cost, robust solution, no internal wiring or making good. Easy to expand the system. Portable can take handset into different rooms and garden.  Secure encoded radio transmission based on the use of rolling code. Can be removed and re installed if you move home.

Cons- Signal can be limited by line of sight, weather and atmospheric  conditions. You are unable to control entrance whilst away from the property,

GSM Based Access control Systems – Average cost inc fitting £900 + 

Pro’s Control your entrance from anywhere in the world. No internal wiring your land line phones are usually already  in the most convenient place. Saves additional cost of remote controls. Increased security as caller will not be aware if you are home or not. Call can be diverted to multiple owners. Accept deliveries when not home. Programming, Faults and diagnostics available remotely reducing engineer visits.

Con’s- No Visual without additional wiring. Will not work if the telephone network down or poor signal area. Ongoing costs to top up PAYG sim card- this will vary depending on how popular you are! It is more difficult to control exit of the building without additional equipment. More expensive than wireless Audio entry control systems.

Hardwired Audio/Visual Access Control – Average cost inc fitting £1,000 + 

Pro’s- Visual and Audio- depending on the grade of equipment very high quality HD video is available. Record-able video available. Monitors can be in interfaced with additional CCTV around your home or other types of home automation systems such as crestron or control 4. Entrance visual monitoring.

Con’s- Night time visuals are poor unless a top of the range model chosen. More expensive than previously mentioned systems due to additional wiring and making good internally. Unlike GSM based systems you are unable to control the access when not at home.

IP Based Access Control Systems- Average Cost inc fitting £3,000 + 

Pro’s the best of all worlds- due to IP integration allows main performances such as access control, monitoring, image and video recording from control points internally and on any other smart mobile device- iPhone, tablet, laptop etc therefore you could be on a beach in Rio and see who is at your gate using your smart phone. Wiring savings as system commissioned by a unique network cable. Full integration of other home automation systems. Simply put there is no better.

Con’s- This is the most expensive type of access control system. Technology not yet mainstream therefore limited amount of professionally trained installers.

It is important to bear in mind that if you are looking to save money buying less expensive hard wired systems, you will need to factor in additional labour costs for cable runs and making good to the decoration to your home. In addition we would strongly recommend using high quality shielded CAT 6 cable duct grade that has a heavy black polyethylene sheath and a flame retardant PVC inner. Cat 6 offers high speed data transfers where underground duct or a weatherproof cabling solution is needed and the additional shielding is recommended if it is run close to power cables- we would always look to avoid running power and data cables in the same duct to reduce interference.

Unlike the movies, the access control panels cannot be blasted by a gun and then your gates will automatically open- however we would recommend installing vandal resistant product should your entrance be located with a large pedestrian footfall and especially youths loitering.

The aspect most people do not consider is exit control- how will people leave your property? Whilst the majority of electric gate systems are fitted with an exit vehicle loop- this will not benefit pedestrians. Push to exit buttons can be installed on timers so they only work during pre-determined hours, therefore on multi-user entrances where possible, it is advisable to have a separate dedicated pedestrian entrance.

The differences between “mild steel” and “wrought iron” driveway gates

Be warned!

Many Gate Automation companies are selling mild steel gates as “wrought iron” as most clients do not fully understand what this means. This could be a very costly mistake especially comparing like for like quotations.

To the untrained eye there is little visible difference between forged bars of wrought iron & Mild Steel- the difference however are worlds apart in terms of durability, weight, finish and construction methods. If you are considering metal electric gates It is very important to understand the difference in quality and value is enormous.

Wrought Iron literally means ‘worked iron’, which refers to the method of manufacturing the metal by working (beating) repeatedly under a hammer- it is the same process that steel workers have used for many centuries whether it be making swords or horse shoes. The work of the blacksmith therefore became known as ‘Wrought Ironwork’, a name that has persisted for the art form even though the metal in use may not be wrought iron.

Wrought Iron’s superior weathering properties that are most notable. Wrought iron is known for its durability and will last many hundreds of years, its unique properties allow it to resist corrosion.  Just look at the amount of Wrought iron in heritage sites and buildings that are over 300 years old- Mild steel can last upto 60 years with suitable galvanising.

Wrought Iron is softer to forge, as it is workable at a higher heat than mild steel making it more ‘malleable’ under the hammer. Amazing ornate shapes can be manipulated into the metal to create stunning gate designs with no visible welds.

Today the common material of gate fabrication is mild steel which is a less expensive, readily available and requires a lower skill level to produce gates than wrought iron.  the years we have commissioned many gate designs both in wrought Iron and mild steel- for the vast majority of residential homes mild steel is most suitable product primarily on weight and cost. A substantial pair of wrought iron gates could be as much as 10 times the cost of its mild steel counter parts. It is also important to take into consideration that “wrought iron” gates are many times heavier and very heavy duty gate automation will be required.

How can you tell if your metal gate is wrought iron or mild steel?

If you can see mechanical welds on the outside of a product then it’s very likely to be made of mild steel. If no welds can be seen then further tests would need to be carried out to determine the material used This is not to say mild steel is unsuitable, indeed it is far less expensive to manufacture and weighs far less so the construction process is very different and can be mass produced.

In summary, If your gate installer is specifying “wrought iron” I would seek further clarification as in most residential gate installations this would not be the case- it would mean they either do not know what they are selling or are deliberately mis leading you into a sale- avoid these companies at all costs.

Very few electric gate installation companies in the UK have the technology, design flair, skills, finance, customer base or opportunity to create bespoke gates in wrought Iron.

In the words of a blacksmith, “You wouldn’t buy a piece of wooden furniture with the glue on the outside of the joints would you?”.

 

Timber gates comparison – Oak, Iroko, Sapele, Idigbo, Redwood

I served my apprenticeship as a joiner making custom made cabinets, paneling and bespoke timber gates. During my 40 years as a time served craftsman and engineer I have since worked on a varied range of projects including royal properties, historical buildings and overseas projects for private clients.

We are often asked which species of timber is most suitable for gate automation. With increased world demand for hardwoods “growing” (pun unintentional), supplies of quality hardwood has become difficult with prices rising. It can sometimes be difficult when choosing the right timber for your new wooden automatic gate system ensuring value for money.

There are a number of factors that need to be considered by your gate installer before making recommendations- elements such as timber density, drying and kilning process, durability, knots (which can be desirable or undesirable depending on the application), machining, moisture, movement , the acceptability of stain/paint finishes, texture, weight/thickness, manufacturing process and hinge geometry all have an important effect on the overall quality and longevity of the system.

In most cases the final decision by the client is almost always dictated by budget and aesthetic preferences.

Whilst this information is not exhaustive, I have put together a list of the most commonly used timbers for gate automation and my review on each. This review is based on some 40 years experience as a craftsman using all types of soft and hardwood for internal and external purposes and personally over 300 timber gate installations. I was also researched with help from the sites referenced below. It is also important to point out that any automatic timber gate whether is be made from hard or softwood is only as good as the individual components that make up the system (gate automation, ironmongery, supporting posts), design, the installation itself, and of course the ongoing maintenance of the gate system.

Iroko is a very durable hardwood. The colour varies from light yellow to golden brown and texture is coarse, often with an interlocked grain. It is indigenous to Africa and is often referred too as “African Oak”   Kiln dried iroko is strongly recommended for external gates.  This is a hard wearing timber which is resistant to decay.  Has many of the desirable features of oak and is commonly used for electric gates, external joinery, boat building and marine work. click here for a case study for iroko automatic gates. or here

The sapwood is creamy white and is sharply defined from the golden, warm-brown of the heartwood.  If left untreated over time it will weather down to reveal the characteristic silver grain which looks fabulous on older character properties.  The timber is hard, heavy and durable.  Oak is very coarse in texture and straight grained, requiring the correct seasoning, hinging and automation.  It can be worked to a fine finish if necessary. As the name would imply English oak is indigenous to the British Isles, it is probably the best known and one of the most versatile of all timbers, being used more extensively and for a greater number of purposes than any other. However this comes at a cost and using this timber could easily double the cost of the entire gate installation.  For clients looking for top of the range timber electric gates- look no further than Oak. At additional cost we have laser etched crests/emblems into the timber or have it carved for truly personal customisation.

Sapele is another hardwood from Africa, the colour dark reddish brown.  Grain is interlocked or wavy with a medium to fine texture.  It stains fairly easily which makes this use of gates easier to maintain in the longer term.  Common uses are usually internal such as furniture, shopfitting, and flooring but is becoming a popular choice to automate timber gates. Sapele can be used as an external wood however it is less durable than Iroko or Oak and has a greater moisture content therefore is can be susceptible to movement which can be offset with the appropriate adjustable hinges. Using sapele for automated gates is a good compromise if a superior hardwood is not attainable due to budget constraints and the option of using softwood is not acceptable.

Colour is yellow to light brown.  The grain is straight to slightly irregular with a medium to fairly coarse texture.  This timber works well by both machine and hand tools and finishes cleanly therefore you can achieve very fine finishes with all the benefits of a hardwood.  Idigbo is an excellent utility timber for many purposes due to its medium weight, ease of working, durability and outstanding stability- in particular for use on timber garage doors and smaller swing gates. Idigbo is not as readily available or mainstream perhaps Iroko therefore the price may be higher. It is perhaps viewed as a more exclusive timber but due to the yellowish colour it is an acquired taste.

Redwood is a popular softwood used for gate automation, typically 5 bar farm gates- Usually sourced from Scandinavia, Russia and the UK is is also known as pine and Scot’s Pine, its colour is pale yellowish-brown to red-brown heartwood with lighter-coloured sapwood. Gates made from Redwood should be treated every 1 to 2 with water-repellent preservative stain , depending on the environment. We would strongly recommend pressure treated softwood gates to ensure the longevity of your gate investment.

Legend-

Paint-Stain This refers to the ease of accepting a stain or paint finish. Oils are recommended for hardwood gates due to ease of application and finish.

Moisture          Moisture movement- the dimensional changes that occur when dried timber is subjected to changes in atmospheric conditions. For situations where varying humidities are likely to be encountered and stability of a component is important, a small movement species should be specified for electric gates.  The most recent standard for moisture content in general is BSEN 942 1996 Timber & Joinery.
